Census of Population 2011
  • The population on Census Day was 1,810,900 – the highest ever recorded in Northern Ireland.

  • Despite the increase in the overall population of 7 per cent, the number of children has fallen by 18,700 (5 per cent) since the 2001 Census.

    • Within this reduction the numbers of primary school age children (aged 4-10) and compulsory secondary school age children (aged 11-15) have both fallen by 9 per cent.
    • In contrast, the number of pre-school children (aged 0-3) has increased by 10 per cent – reflecting recent increases in fertility.

This page will be updated as more information from Census 2011 is released.  The next release which will be available in September 2012 will provide population information by Local Government Districts (LGD). 
 

Census of Population 2001

On Census Day April 29th 2001, the resident population of Derry LGD was 105,066. Of this population:

  • 26.8% were under 16 years old and 13.6% were aged 60 and over;

  • 48.7% of the population were male and 51.3% were female;

  • 75.4% were from a Catholic community background and 23.2% were from a 'Protestant and Other Christian (including Christian related)' community background;

  • 37.9% of persons aged 16 and over were single (never married);

  • 32.8 years was the average age of the population; and

  • the population density was 2.71 persons per hectare

Note: The 2011 Census was carried out on March 27th 2011, and once the results are released details will be available for the current population of the city.  Information sessions on Census Outputs were delivered across NI January/February 2012.  
Headline results are proposed to be available in September 2012 for LGD.

Mid-Year Population Estimates

Mid-year population estimates in 2010 report the population of Derry~Londondery to be 109,826
  • almost a quarter (23.3%) are children aged under 16

  • three out of five residents are of working age
     

  • of all the District Councils in Northern Ireland, Derry~Londonderry has the smallest proportion of older people (14%)
